Emily’s Story
Watoto first met Emily in primary school through its “Keep a Girl in School” programme. Emily recounts the relief it brought, “I was so excited when we received sanitary pads, soap, and undergarment. It meant I no longer had to feel ashamed or afraid to attend school during my period.”
Tragically, after she finished her first year of secondary school, Emily was forced to drop out of school. This was because her new school was not part of the “Keep a Girl in School” programme, and her family could not afford her school fees.

Just when Emily thought her dream was lost, Watoto found her working in a quarry. They gave her the most precious gift of all—an invitation to continue her studies at a school in a Watoto Children’s Village, which allowed her to return to campus. This was a big change that completely transformed her life. “I’ll always remember the feeling of stepping back into the classroom on the first day. I was both nervous and excited because I could have dreams again.” She really cherished this precious second chance, and she studied with even more dedication to make up for the time she had missed.
Today, Emily has blossomed into a strong and independent woman. Thanks to the loving care of Watoto, she excelled in her studies and was admitted to university to study law. This is different from her childhood dream of becoming a journalist because, as a grown-up, she now yearns for “action.” She says, “There’s so much more to do than just reporting the stories of the community. I’m passionate about helping those who are vulnerable and in need.” As she’s grown, her dreams have grown with her.
From a beneficiary to a future advocate, Emily has found her calling in her faith, “I believe God is calling me to be a voice for those who can’t speak up for themselves.” She is determined to become a transformative leader in her community. She’s passionate about creating a culture where girls are valued and can learn and grow in a safe and free environment. She believes that every girl should be able to dream and reach their full potential.
